Moving Subjects with X-T1?

Can anyone provide any assistance?

I'm looking for a little advice regarding AF on the X-T1.

I had a trip to watch horse racing for my fathers birthday this weekend the camera camera along. I fancied trying to photograph the horses and riders as they trotted around the parade ring before and after each race.

I tried several configurations but really struggled and my keeper rate was terrible.

The following day i tried to take some photos of my sons and nephews running around and again really struggled - any sharp photos really were more luck i feel.

I appriciate the AF will not be as quick and accurate as the newer bodies like the X-H1/X-T3/30 - but would like to see if there is anything i can do.

Should i be pre focusing where possible? (okay for horses but not so much for kids - never know which way they will go  )

If it helps, i was using the 55-200mm.

Thank you all in advance.
