I think I have PTSD over what Canon expected me to pay for the 6D2, and in line with the thread, unless a small, light FF body like the RP has small, light lenses available, it is rather pointless to me.

Everyone has their own ways of seeing things, this is one that I don't really understand. The camera and lens are a unit while in use. Lower the weight of either of them and you've lowered the weight of the unit. If lowering weight is the point, then lowering the total weight should serve the point.

Yep, fair enough, I can see what you are getting at.

I do a lot of hiking, climbing etc and use a 5D2 / 16-35/4 combo. Size and weight are a definite consideration for myself.

The thing with the RP is that it is not really up to the spec that I would like, but I would be willing to compromise if there was enough of an advantage with size / weight etc.

Having to adapt EF lenses to the RP negates the one real advantage it has for me.

For example, I think Canon has done a good job with the EOS M5/50 and the EF-M 11-22. That set up might be worth the compromise in IQ for very real benefits in size and weight. [I don't think anyone else really offers a well performing WA mirrorless option for the price].

But the RP and adapted lenses? Might as well save up for the EOS R, or something else...

[I did buy a 100D and EF-S 10-18 as my lightweight kit. To cut a long story short, I still lug the 5D2/16-35 with me].

i prefer deep dof potential of WA 24/1.4 FF + more recently UWA 12/2.8 FF (on my 5D2):

so, if i were to use UWA for a compact lightweight EOS M50 (1.61435x stills; 2.5224x 4k uhd), i'd get:

  • 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Laowa prime
  • =(deep DoF = 4.29mm aperture diameter)
  • x 1.61435 = FF 19.3722mm f/2.8 brightness
  • with 0.71x EF-EFM speedbooster = FF 13.8mm f/2 brightness 24mp
  • x 1.5625 = FF 21.5mm f/2 brightness 4k uhd

or get an EF mount (APSC coverage) sigma AF zoom:

  • 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6
  • =(deep DoF = 1.78mm - 2.86mm aperture diameter)
  • x 1.61435 = FF 12.9-25.8mm f/4.5-5.6 brightness
  • with 0.71x EF-EFM speedbooster = 9.2-18.3mm f/3.2-4 brightness 24mp = nice!
  • x 1.5625 = FF 14.33 - 28.66mm f/3.2-4 brightness 4k uhd = fastest + wide = nice!

on EOS R:

  • Sigma EF (APSC coverage) 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 (EF-EOSR: Variable ND+CP Filters)
  • =(deep DoF = 1.78mm - 2.86mm aperture diameter)
  • x 1.609 = FF 12.9-25.8mm f/4.5-5.6 brightness 11.6mp (Crop mode)
  • x 1.750 = FF 14-28mm f/4.5-5.6 brightness 4k uhd = wide 4k uhd

on EOS RP:

  • Sigma EF (APSC coverage) 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 (EF-EOSR: Variable ND+CP Filters)
  • =(deep DoF = 1.78mm - 2.86mm aperture diameter)
  • x 1.605 = FF 12.8-25.7mm f/4.5-5.6 brightness 10.1mp (Crop mode)
  • x 1.630 = FF 13.04-26.06mm f/4.5-5.6 brightness 4k uhd = widest 4k uhd !!!

others attempting identical Deep DoF + FoV AoV = end up with SLOWER f# (proportionately darker by lack of speedcrop factor)

or to maintain F-brightness, others must use wider bigger aperture diameters = shallower dof (less depth = less details)
