I don't know that APS-Z could get that much smaller. They made the mount very big for FF lenses.

I suggested years ago that Canikon keep their existing SLR mounts, but ditch the mirrors and push optical elements deep into the new space. They'd have to call it a different mount to keep consumers from destroying the mirrors on their DSLRs but they'd have that compatibility. Ordinarily F mount's small throat diameter would be an issue but I think it would be fine for APS-C.

The F mount is slightly bigger than the Sony E mount and being further away from the sensor would not suffer from mechanical vignetting,
