I have always suspected the collapse in sales was coming from the bottom of the DSLR market. In many cases, for good reason. EOS 4000D just appears to be an EOS 1200D with Wi-Fi. What does a D3500 have over a D3200? An older family member recently passed... their camera of choice? A D40. My guess is they took the SD card- probably the same one they've been using since 2006- to the same pharmacy they got their film photos developed at.

I'm not super convinced that MILCs are doing a ton better besides at the tippy top of the market either, where we are just gadget freaks bent on having the latest and greatest. On average cameras over the last ~6 years have been so good I can see why many wouldn't see any value in upgrading.  Compound that with the robust used market and the fact that many casual ILC users have long moved on to cell phones... rough business.
