I think the Sigmas do a sensational job producing B&W pictures if you just use the top layer. I like the B&W from my 15mp Merrill better than those from my 24mp Nex 7.

Yes - but not for low light etc. One benefit of removing the CFA is that you get much better high ISO performance. First you gain about a stop of sensitivity (the CFA blocks about a stop of light). Second you get a more "organic" grain pattern.
