Hi winkalman,

I recently purchased an Illum from ebay to experiment with. And the answer is yes, you can generate 3d images, again will work best for subjects at close range, or zoomed in. But even on images further away, you can generate depth maps. If you want to experiment before buying, you can download the last version of the Lytro software and sample images :

I have not spent too much time creating 3d images, but you can extract left & right images using the lytro tool, StereoPhoto lets you combine images, extract depth maps etc. The image resolution is only about 4mp, but should be fine for most uses. The camera is "funky" and has a learning curve.
