Assuming Nikon is developing a DX mirrorless body...

It could be years.

Compare the Nikon 18-140 (on D7200) to the Sony 18-135 (on a6400).

I appreciate a lot about Nikon, but I travel a lot and size/weight matters. Also, I'm more likely to take smaller gear out casually around town.

If size and weight matters, you could significantly reduce the bulk of the DX DSLR: The D5xxx series is quite compact and very light (still not as small as the Sony obviously). And of course you could use the collapsible 18-55mm AF-S VRii or AF-P lens, which are incredibly lightweight and compact.
