Or, just manage without a camera for 12 months. Do some drawing instead. Raymond Sheppard's classic books on drawing birds and other creatures are still good (birds don't change much) and have been reprinted by Dover Books.

The drawing suggestion made me smile because I actually thought about it. I used to draw years ago but never had the discipline to get where I wanted. It was not about birds though, more the ability to do sketches of people attitude / facial expression.
