If you want "reach" for birds and you can't afford a replacement sdQ, then you should look for smaller pixels to make up for the Bayer effect.

Maybe there is an M4/3 camera with 20 Megapixels that is not too expensive used, and will take the Canon lenses with an adapter.

Or, just manage without a camera for 12 months. Do some drawing instead. Raymond Sheppard's classic books on drawing birds and other creatures are still good (birds don't change much) and have been reprinted by Dover Books.
