Z7 IBIS sharpness

Still, I have only seen the effect of front curtain off on very low shutter time and more at close distance.

As you say this is probably a case of understanding the set up and lean the machine huts like for AF.

i also suspect that limiting ti 1/2000 is because of issues they have seen beyond that speed. I would have though appreciated that the camera automatically sets ibis and front curtain off after a given shutter speed.

I might be be wrong but I think also my Fuji limits EF to 1/2000.

I don't understand that last part.

My Fuji limits EFCS to 1/500 or less.

The Sony's let you set it any way you want, and with native lenses, they have some trickery to keep the shading at bay above 1/2000 in some circumstances.

My iPad always makes a mess with my typos .... I meant we just need to learn how to use the camera just like for AF.

for Fuji I could not find any hard value in the manual. I guess I need to take it out of the bag, I am curious now :)

It says on the cameras (Fuji x-t3) EF till 1/2000. I did remember I saw it somewhere.

Gotcha.

It's not in the GFX manual. You can find out easily by setting it to EFCS and changing the shutter speed while listening to the sound the camera makes when the shutter goes off.

Oooo a GFX user .... I have been looking and looking at it instead of a z7 next to the D850. But I simply cannot find a way to justify it without risking a divorce. And I have not enough redundant stuff I could sell to fund one.

So I can confirm that turning EFCS on fixed my problem. I shot the same subjects, similar conditions, and the IBIS version is as good or slightly better then the non IBIS version.

I am not sure if that is generally the case for all Z7's or just my specific one,
It should be the case for all of them.
but at least I am now getting sharp pictures, thank you Jim and Alex for helping me figure this out.
A pleasure.

I can't remember: is the Z7 default for EFCS to be off? If that's the case, there's a fix for Nikon right there. Of course, unless they change more of the FW, they'd then have to explain to their customers why the camera shutter won't go faster than 1/2000...

Jim
Yes default is off... so if it does effect all Z7's, I think they have to set it to on by default. Otherwise they would have had an RMA on their hands, I would not have thought to try EFCS on if I had not used this forum....
Downside is people would complain they can't set shutter above 1/2000s. Nikon could end up with even more RMA's:-P

Personally, I don't know why the default isn't EFCS off for shutter speeds above 1/2000s, on otherwise.

The current (still available?) bundles on the 50R are pretty amazing...

I am having the same issue, almost two weeks and tried with different settings but unable to take sharp photos. If this issue is not in general then it maybe with some devices. Ppl please help to identify.

If that's the case, its very disappointing. I tried sony A7 III this is not the case with sony.

OP solved it by enabling EFCS. Have you enabled EFCS?

Do you have any pictures to demonsreate your "problems"? Without any pics to analyse it is not possible to give any help. Two weeks with the camera and not a sharp picture? Sounds very veird to me...

Any ideas of why this is? Anyone else tested IBIS this way? I hope its just my camera so i can get it replaced or fixed.
Look to me like something is defective. It's certainly not supposed to be that way. Repair or replace.
I actually have a Nikon service center near my office. I will take it to them and see what they say... I have asked Adorama for an RMA as well... lets see....
Hello,

Thom Hagen's book on the Z cameras says this on p.579, and others here have mentioned it.

"It might not be focus. The double-slap of the mechanical shutter can clearly influence image acuity when the shutter speed is in the modest range (e.g. 1/15 to 1/125). VR is not going to fix this problem, and may even exacerbate it at times. The simple choice is to avoid those shutter speeds, but you can also turn on the Electronic First Curtain Shutter (Custom Setting #D5). Know that doing so maxes out your top shutter speed to 1/2000, though."
