I am not a fan of object-space approaches, but this reference has an excellent explanation of image-space methods in the early chapters:

I suggest you read it, get a laser rangefinder, and work through some examples with your own choice of subject matter. After sufficient time spent doing that, you'll find that you can just estimate the distances well enough that you won't need the rangefinder as much -- or, possibly, at all.
