Impressed enough with my new Z6 that I’m putting a D500 purchase on hold

I recently picked up a Z6 to be a new “generalist” body to replace my Df.  I also have a DX kit for action shooting built around an old D300 that I bought new.  The D300 is in great shape, it’s just getting long in the tooth.

After attending two of the Z prerelease events I came up with a plan - I would go with a Z6 to replace the Df, and pick up a D500 to replace the D300.  I would slowly replace most of my F mount lenses with Z mount as they became available, and just keep a core kit of F mount lenses for action shooting on the D500 - most of which is done with tele zooms.

Best laid plans...

My experience with the Z6 is now making me think I should keep going with the D300 until we see how Nikon fleshes out the Z line over the next few years.  I’m of the opinion that Nikon will release a high end (read “$$$$”) action optimized Z in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and I also expect a lower tier action oriented Z body will follow within a year or so after that.  I doubt a high end action Z would be financially justifiable for me, but a Z with a vertical grip and the AF characteristics of a D850 or D500 would be a good fit for how I shoot.

Anyone else that is putting traditional DSLR acquisitions on hold until Nikon fills out the Z line?
