Back Button Focus for beginner
1

I am new to digital photography and I have a Nikon D7500.  I like to shoot my kids playing sports as well as some birds and wildlife when I go hiking.  I just learned about back button focus.  I have not tried it yet but was wondering if using it is ok for beginners.  I was thinking it should make focusing using AF-C easier as I can just hold the back button instead of keeping the shutter pressed down halfway as my target moves.  Are there any advantages or disadvantages to back button focus for a beginner such as myself?  Also, if I am using AF-S and I press the back button, then release it, does it keep focus lock on the subject, or do I need to continue to hold it down for AF-S also?
