Variation in video quality from scene to scene

I was watching the parody video clip for "Sail" ... and cannot help but notice the variation in video quality from the opening shots where colors really pop and everything is awesome to the 0:33 mark were we get a wide shot and everything gets mushy.

I know this is low budget but why come such difference?

I am pretty sure this was shot on the same camera and that that was a Canon DSLR.

Was it the lens? The bitrate?

Or simply that the first close up shots were shot with a really open aperture at low ISO (dof is narrow for sure) and the wide shots at a more narrow aperture and therefore much higher ISO?
