I'm in a similar boat, and so far I've not made a choice. There's 3 similarly priced options in the canon camp, used - 300 f4 USM, 100-400 USM ver1, and 400 5.6 - all in the 600-700 USD range. Add in a Fringer adapter, you have a $900 lens that isn't horrible at AF but not super fast, and maybe bigger than it needs to be. The cost seems a bit much, especially if there's no other Canon lenses you want to use(if there are, it becomes far more attractive, the Sigma 50-100 1.8 and other unique optics come to mind).

But it does look like the best long term option is the Fuji 100-400, if you're looking for just one lens.
