Back to full Foveon!
10

This is a citation from Kazuto Yamaki san:

I gave a presentation [to a Japanese audience at CP+] and we announced the basic spec of the [full-frame] sensor [currently being developed]. It's 20 megapixels times three, so about 60MP. They're not tiny pixels: they're relatively big pixels so each pixel can capture enough light. And we've gone back to the original pixel structure: 1:1:1, so people can expect very nice, rich data from the sensor.

So - they are developing a 3x20MP FF Full Foveon sensor. That is interesting.

They are brave. When this is ready, 50 MP Bayer FF sensors will be common from all FF manufacturers. There are then two possibilities.

  1. They have made some breakthrough improvements and the sensor is essentially flawless. Low noise. Perfect color separation. No unevenness. No blotches. Then this 20 MP camera will be stunning. It will then be hard to ignore for anyone wanting superior quality.
  2. The technology level is essentially as the current one, maybe a bit better. Then the only advantages over Merrill are some more pixels and slightly larger pixels. This might then be the best full Foveon camera ever made, a substantial step over Merrill, a 20 MP camera with SD15 quality of the pixels. Very nice for Foveon fans. But hard to sell outside of than group.
