I use the 24 on my 70d and its 40mm cousin on my full frames. I just love these lenses! They are somehow just so "pure" and fun and sharp and cheap..... And LIGHT! I have traveled to France and Germany taking only this lens on my 70d, and had a blast....and got great pics (for me at least)! Next month I head to Rome and I've decided to throw the 40mm on my 6d and only take that (I anticipate a lot of low light churches, catacombs, etc....)

F/2.8 is not fast enough to be a low light choice. But having said that, I wouldn't necessarily suggest a faster lens - for static subjects IS is way more effective. It also remains beneficial when you want to stop down for depth of field.

The EF 24/2.8 IS is still a fairly small, light lens but with four-stop IS you have a much better chance of successful hand-held shots in those poorly-lit interiors. It also has sharper corners and much less CA than the pancake, FWIW.

I understand the love for the pancake lenses, but there's a reason why the bigger lenses exist.
