Normally, a CPU replacement only requires removal of the rear casing around the lens mount. It should be relatively simple. Good luck.

I would hate to lose my 18-55. My second copy was a really good one, and it's a constant travel companion. First one was a dog, which had all sorts of camera-lens communication issues - even causing the camera to lock up. I suspected a CPU issue, but it was replaced by the dealer (even though it came with the kit).
