Green Cast - Sigma vs M42 Takumar
3

A few posts lately on a perceived "green cast" with an Asahi Lens Co Pentax Super-Takumar M42 lens on an sd Quattro H. Real World scenes were posted as examples.

Instead, I shot a Kodak white card at f/8, infinity focus, processed the X3F at defaults in SPP 5.5.3 using the color balance picker in the image center.

So here's a much more scientific comparison albeit using an SD15, not a Quattro.

Sigma as shot:

Takumar as shot:

Seems to be some green in the Takumar shot - each side presumably because I color-balanced the middle.

Out of interest, I extracted the hues from the above two shots. Any color variation is shown at 100% saturation for clarity:

Sigma hues:

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 set to 28mm FL.

Bearing in mind the actual RGB image, it's not as bad as it looks. Actual color casts are way lower in saturation!

Takumar hues:

M42 Super-Takumar 28mm

Well, that sure tells a tale, does it not?

Although this was but one test with one lens on one camera, the difference between the two lenses is quite obvious.

I used the GIMP 2.10 to extract the hue layer and a little trick to show color rather than the more normal hues-as-gray-levels.
