Westward HO. October 1962. Cross eye version. Arizona near Route 66. Lots of kicks. Stereo Realist F 3.5 early model version with no double exp prevention button....

Cool,

I owned a 1959 VW with sunroof and a 1955 Karmann Ghia while stationed in Germany in 1969. Wish I had them now.

Hi Steve.

VW's were hot sellers in those late '50 to early '60s years. Cheap with fuel beyond belief and a college kids Love Bug thing. I bought the convertible because there was a waiting list for the little bug coupe. The '61 had some big time mechanical problems that cost me a lot of money I did not have but it was a cute machine. No, I do not wish to have that care back again. Sadly underpowered.

Wife still remembers it with pleasure, though I do not recall top down a lot frankly. We did have luck to search out competent and honest mechanic back in San Diego. Dealerships, well, were just iffy on repairs. ( Soft camshafts. True.)

We now own a Passat which is a different stripe of VW. Air cooled flat four was small and fit up front...but battery below the rear seat. Odd stuff I recall still. No gas guage per se...

'61 VW parked in the beach area of San Diego in '62. Remember white sidewalls, folks? Karrman body design. Had its peculiarities. But became a cult vehicle for many. I am not one that loved it for long

Photo in Pacific Beach San Diego of our car. i have a number of 3-Ds but not processed for viewing on screen.
