Electronic Shutter: Less Noisy at High ISO?
2

I recently acquired an X-E3. Wanting to test the high ISO performance and underlying noise characteristics of the sensor, I decided to take two lens cap photos, which I have posted below for review.

Both shots are at f/8, 1/250 second shutter, 12,800 ISO. The first image is taken using mechanical shutter, the second is taken using electronic shutter. I boosted both images by 3 EV in Darktable to observe the underlying noise performance of the sensor. No noise reduction has been applied to either image.

The mechanical shutter image displays some level of underlying amp / sensor glow along the bottom of the image and slightly to the left of the image. Not surprisingly, the image also displays a high level of underlying noise (due to the high ISO + boosted EV).

Interestingly, on the other hand, the electronic shutter image displays seemingly the same level of underlying noise, but no apparent amp / sensor glow.

If it would be helpful to post the actual RAW files, please let me know.

What could be the cause of this? Is it advisable to shoot using the electronic shutter at high ISO levels?
