Given the elegance of photon counting in CIS (being source limited wrgt scene information) it seems like a let down to turn perfectly good photons into heat in a CFA just to be able to estimate the energy of remaining photons.

Is there no way to count individual photons while estimating their energy?

I don't like wasting photons either, but I don't know of a way that works at room temperature and can be built from existing technology in multimegapixel arrays at reasonable cost....Not to mention maintaining ultra-low noise.

I have been thinking about this problem for almost 30 years...

Maybe you could partner with Sony? They have a long track record of commercializing sensor technologies that others couldn't get out of the lab.

LMAO!  good one!

Sure, maybe they will acquire Gigajot some day.
