Camera clubs - print competitions

My camera club, Bath Photographic Society in the UK, is looking for ways to improve print competitions by making the prints more visible to everybody in the hall, including those at the back.

The club has both print and digital projected image competitions. Prints are displayed on a stand at the front of the hall.  Sometimes judges put more than one print up on the stand at the same time, e.g. for a "panel of three" competition or when putting up competition winners.  All prints have to be summitted on 20"x16" mounts which means that, allowing for the matte surround, the actual printed image size is typically around 16"x11". This makes it very difficult for anybody beyond about the front two rows of the hall to see any details in the print and, for me at least, makes print competitions a lot less enjoyable than projected image competitions.

We have just started to look at ways of making it easier for members further back in the hall to view the prints by simultaneously projecting a image of the print on a screen beside the print stand. Ways that we have though of so far include:

  1. Getting members to submit a digital image file along with their print. This requires a lot of management of the process of both file collection and image projection and it would probably be pretty chaotic to start off with, especially getting contestants to submit their image files.
  2. Using a remote controlled video camera to display an image of a single print on the print stand, or possibly a group of prints.  This requires somebody to operate the remote control and may take time to focus on a print.
  3. Using a fixed print position on the stand and a fixed video camera aimed at that print position. This would be simpler than (2) but would be less flexible.

I am sure that other camera clubs have experienced this problem and we would be very interested in any feedback or guidance that they could give us before we start spending on equipment to try out the various options.
