How uh..... "durable" are lenses?

Just wondering... I'm normally super careful, but things happen.

So, I dropped my Sigma 50-100 F1.8 Art today.  Thing is a beast, and it actually more "rolled" out of my shoulder bag as I was trying to swap lenses on the fly.   The good news is that it rolled out lengthwise - I was able to break its fall with a soft catch with the top of my shoe - and then it rolled off again into some pretty thick grass.  No visible damage, other than some dirt marks on the lens caps.

Pretty sure I dodged a bullet as it still takes pictures fine.  But was just wondering.  I've seen broken lenses, and I know the pro bodies take a fair amount of abuse in travels.  Not that I'd advocate testing, but I'm sure there's some spec or baseline that the design process goes though, else everything would break at the smallest shock.

Any thoughts?
