Should I buy an 82mm filter for my 77mm thread lens?

Hi, I have a Canon 24-70mm f4 L lens on the way which I bought on eBay. It has a 77mm thread. The largest thread I've had so far is only 58mm, and I've never had trouble using filters on it. However because the 77mm one is quite wide/large, is there anything to watch out for when buying filters? I've heard before that it is easier to encounter vignetting when using filters on lenses which have large thread sizes.

I'm planning to get a CPL, and a couple of ND filters (a 10 stop and perhaps a 5 stop. I'm still reading conflicting info about whether variable ND filters cause issues, so I was thinking of sticking with non-variable.)

So I was wondering, is it essential that the filter says it is "Slim"?

And should I get an 82mm filter instead of 77mm one, with a step-up adapter?

Will those things help avoid vignetting? Or is it not necessary?

Thanks.
