IQ and pixel count - not necessarily connected

Reviews and forum posts go on about the great IQ of high pixel count cameras.

I've used the 35 mp Pentax K1 and the 20 mp (actually 17 mp cropped to 3/2 format) Panasonic G9 to take the same image one after the other.

Zoomed in, the Pentax image stays cleaner than the Panasonic.

But printed at A4 on a good printer, I can't see a difference however hard I try. I'm guessing the same is true for A3 going by what I see when zooming in on the screen.

So for A4 and A3 it seems to me the extra definition is wasted.  And most of us never print larger than A3. I certainly don't see many.

So unless we plan to print huge prints or crop very heavily, high mp cameras are wasted on us.

Or am I missing something?
