Canon Pixma Pro-100; how often do I really need to print?

I just purchased my second Pixma Pro 100. I used the first one for about three years or so. But then I let it sit for several months without printing, and even after several deep cleanings of the print head I couldn't get a couple of the colors to print. I know, I probably could have purchased a new print head, but I decided to get a new printer. The old one didn't fit together just right. This new one is working fine, but I have one question. I don't print a lot of images. I had considered purchasing something smaller and less expensive. But everything I looked at was one of those all-in-one printers, and I really don't want one of those. I know I need to print periodically just to keep the print head from clogging. If I'm not going to print-, would just running a print nozzle test print from the maintenance page in the printer driver suffice to keep things flowing properly?
