7Dii Noise

I've gotten tired of waiting for the 7Diii so I'm considering upgrading to a 7Dii.  Currently I've a generation's old T2i coupled with a 400mm f5.6L.  It doesn't do too bad in light, but if it's overcast or cloudy, I'm limited to ISO 800 at f8.  Higher ISOs result in an unacceptable amount of grain.  I even notice it at ISO 800, but post processing usually takes care of that without too much softening.

My question is for 7Dii owners with 300mm - 400mm lenses.  What is the highest useable ISO that you've encountered with your camera before noise becomes noticeable?

Any low light, high mag, cropped and unsharpened photos would be appreciated.
