Looking for tripod head recommendations for hummingbird photos

What tripod head would you recommend for photographing hummingbirds?  We don't have flowers so the only way we have of attracting them is by using feeders.  Usually, the birds' flights are very erratic and sometimes they engage in territorial fighting and chasing.  Following them with a camera is challenging.

There may be long intervals--say, ten minutes, or so--without activity, so I like to be able to have the camera supported and aimed without my having to hold onto it all that time.  When the birds come around the camera/tripod needs to be ready to use in an instant.

I have a massive Bogen tripod that has a good pan and tilt head.  Is there anything else that would work better?   Ball head?  Gimbal?  What model?
