Sandisk Extreme Pro uhs-i 95mb/s vs 170mb/s in A7iii

Hey all,

I've been wanting a 128g card as backup in my A7iii for shooting events where I'm doing long bursts. Months ago I picked up a Sony G card that writes pretty quickly so that the cache is cleared fast. But, once it's filled, I'm back to using the uhs-i card in the second slot. I've filled it a few times during events (usually because I forgot to delete images from previous shoots) so wanted to upgrade to a bigger card. There were two options that I considered. I've been using a 64gb Sandisk Extreme Pro card with 95mb/s transfer speeds. This is plenty fast, but I noticed that there was a new version of the card available that advertised 170mb/s read speed with the Sandisk card reader. I logically expected the transfer speeds to be at least as fast as the previous version, if not a little faster in camera.

So, I picked one up and ran a few tests using both versions of the card in both slots. After a search of the forum, I was unable to find any other tests that were done, and had there been I may have made a different purchase choice (results below.)  I ran bursts on the high speed shutter setting, manually timed it using my iPhone, beginning with the depression of the shutter button and ending when the cache was cleared. The shutter was released as soon as the high speed shutter stopped when the cache was filled. I know this is not extremely precise, but the results were remarkably consistent--within a fraction of a second--between tests. Here are the results:

Sony G 64g uhs-ii w:299mb/s tested in slot 1:

  1. 43 images / 17.89s
  2. 43 images / 17.68s

Sandisk Extreme Pro 64g uhs-i 95mb/s

  1. Slot 1 (uhs-ii)
    1. 37 images / 24.66s
    2. 37 images / 24.72s
  2. Slot 2 (uhs-i)
    1. 36 images / 26.80s
    2. 36 images / 27.29s

Sandisk Extreme Pro 128g uhs-i 170mb/s

  1. Slot 1 (uhs-ii)
    1. 36 images / 27.78s
    2. 36 images / 27.85s
  2. Slot 2 (uhs-i)
    1. 35 images / 30.15s
    2. 35 images / 30.02s

The conclusions of my moderately precise test demonstrated that the write speed of the earlier version of the SanDisk card (95mb/s) was actually faster in the A7iii than the newer card.  I understand that the firmware of the camera originally had trouble with the 128gb cards from Sandisk, so perhaps the capacity had some affect on the results of the test, but I claim ignorance with respect to how these things work.

If you're out for utter speed, the uhs-ii card is without a doubt faster.  But if you're intending to use a uhs-i card, the 95mb/s version of the SanDisk card was faster in both slots of my A7iii than the newer 170mb/s card.  They were close, for sure, and the transfer speed to your computer will be faster using the newer uhs-ii SanDisk card reader than the 95mb/s card.  But in camera, the old one was moderately faster than the new one.  I hope this was helpful to those of you who might have had a similar question.
