I used to own the 300 f/4 L IS. It was pretty sharp, and it focused very close, which was nice. I found the AF to be kind of slow, and it wasn't as sharp as I would have liked with a 1.4x. (In comparison, I think a 1.4x works great with a 300 2.8 IS and a 70-200 f4 IS II.) I've heard that both the 400 5.6 and the 100-400 II are both noticeably sharper and have faster AF.

This thread got a lot more response than I thought it would, thanks everyone!  Lots of great info/opinions here.

gcrimmins, the close focus is one of the things that is drawing me to the lens, and I've heard with extension tubes it gets better and can push magnification up to around 0.4.   I know there are sharper lenses out there but a lot of the reviews I've seen still say this is one is extremely sharp.  And the 100-400 is out of my price range unfortunately.

There does still seem to be a lot of love for this lens out there.  I think I'm going to rent it along with the 400 f/5.6 sometime this spring/summer and see which one I prefer using more.
