Why are Gray Market Cheaper

I understand what a gray market is and that there is no US warranty. I consider any seller warranty useless and might be happily surprised but wouldn't count on it.

My question is rather specific and is "What makes for rather large difference in cost?"

Is it purely the cost of administering a warranty under US law? Import tariffs? Something else? There has to economics behind it. Importers need to make money too.

The cost difference is pretty huge as I can get a new 5D4 import from a respected vendor for about $2100+/- and current US retail for a US version from a reputable dealer for $3k. That's roughly a $900 difference and that gap is lower than it's been. For that I figure, worst case could, get 2 paid for repairs figuring $400/each and still be ahead of the game. Two repairs seems unlikely in the first year.
