It's a semi-reflecting mirror. Canon used the same thing in film SLRs at one time.
Canon used pellicle mirrors, Sony's "Single-Lens Translucent" is different tech but accomplishes the same thing.
Sony's A mount line is being very slowly phased out, replaced by the E mount mirrorless models.
It is an SLT, which means the mirror is translucent, and does not "reflex" (move). My Sony A65 is the same. It's weird that the camera shoots, but the photos are out of focus. I wonder what happened.
An SLT still has an AF module, it does not AF on-chip. So it has been knocked out of alignment — it's the biggest issue with SLRs really.
If he Manually Focuses via Live View or the EVF, it should be fine.
