Best 30mm lens for DX with realiable AF

Hi, what would you consider the absolute best ~30mm effective focal length for Nikon DX that is really sharp from at least F2.5 and can reliably autofocus on all D500 af points? (Could also be 28mm but 35mm would already be a little too much.)

Used Nikon 20mm f1.8 for about 6 months but it was great only from about F3.5 and quite weirdly, often picked up focus on background rather than people in front of it (AF-C, single AF point) even if my AF point was spot on.

Tested Sigma 18-35 and on outer AF points it was absolute garbage, couldn't properly focus.

What are my other options if I don't want to go fullframe or switch to Fuji (yet)? My use case is environmental portraits.

Appreciate all hands-on experience from fellow DX users.
