I bought the really right stuff base plate only . It costs less than the Sony grip. It gives you room for your pinky which is all the Sony extension does

I have the Sony grip with the A9 (same for A7III/RIII) and I can place the camera on a flat suface with the Batis 25 f2 without problems, For example, I can use a tripod or mount the camera and both batteries go inside the grip so I don’t understand your findings. Why do you need the battery compartment if one can place two batteries inside the grip?

Anyway, everything depends on preferences so...
