Word of the day: Birefringence. HTH do I get rid of it?!?

Met with a client yesterday, and a topic of conversation came up regarding one of their products I have shot. No matter which angle, lighting setup, using a polarizer and elbow grease, I was still getting the BIREFRINGENCE effect (characterized as "induced alignment of materials such as asymmetric polymers that become ordered in the presence of fluid flow.”). Short of a $30k one-off glass top, we (me & the client) could not come up with a good solution to not show this effect. Any thoughts?

BIREFRINGENCE occurring on top of cover.
