I can achieve pretty damned consistent manual focus through the 850 viewfinder from F/4 up in terms of nailing it.

That's not a high bar considering typical focusing screens, "digital rangefinder" aids and effective 20/20 vision. The real bar is at f/1.4 - f/2.8 with focus-shifting lenses.

In terms of AF, the Z7 isn't bad, but a recent session with the Canon R, well, let's just say I was somewhat embarrassed at how much better the Canons R AF locked onto things. It wasn't even close. I'd almost go as far to say that if the Canon R was higher in the resolution count, with that amazing 28-70/2 R mount lens, I would no longer be a Nikon shooter.

What EV range were the subjects and what apertures were you using to take the images?

Rumors are starting to trickle out about a 60-70 MP R

So you didn't find single-shot, precision AF-S on a Z to be any better than what you can get out of a D850?
