This is actually a good observation.  According to Canon's white paper, page 8, they designed the mount to mimic the EF pin location, its protrusion, and to maintain identical twist of 60 degrees while mounting the lens.  But they wanted prevent that EF lenses would be mounted by mistake in the RF mount.

In the cap though they should have designed the plastic flanges shorter so that the cap might be put on in any orientation.

I used to have Nikon V1 several years back.  They did so many things right: The viewfinder was great for its time, the AF was so good.  And yet they blew so many other things, what ultimately killed the system.  One of these things was also the "little annoyance" with the lens cap:  people complained about that a lot.
