Dumb Lens Question

I have possibly what may be a dumb question about lenses.

I have the kit 70-300mm with my D5600 and wanted to get something with a higher zoom capability to be able to capture the birds that frequent my yard.  I also would like something faster than the f/4 that is the current limit on the kit lens.

While I have been shooting for a while, it has been mainly film and my older D100 that I never really went beyond daily shootig with, so I am not familiar with the conversions and all.  If I were to go up to a 400mm or longer that is meant for a full frame how much would I be compromising on a crop sensor?  I know the mounts are the same but I don't know how all the techno-mumbo-jumbo works.
