Do you keep the same subject when shooting a roll of film?

Is it a good idea to keep all the subject of a single roll of film on the same subject? Let's say you were out shooting Yosemite and did 20 exposures in a 36 exposure roll, and the battery died or whatever, so you pack up and go home. Next time you want to use the camera, maybe it's your kid's birthday. Do you start a new roll because you don't want two completely different things on the same roll of film, or do you use up the remaining 16 exposures to save film?
