using +7 diopter macro wet lens - working distance?

I have a Bluewater Photo +7 diopter macro wet lens.   I am taking it diving with me next week, and I'm wondering how to use it.  (Or even test it).

I've actually had this lens for 5 years, originally bought for use on an RX100.   I tried it a few times and never got a single subject in focus so I put it in a drawer until now.

I'm thinking the only issue with it is working distance.   When I tried it before, I probably simply didn't get close enough.   It seems I'll have to have the front of the camera within a few inches of the subject.

How close does one have to be with this diopter to have subjects in range of focus?   And can you test above water, or does a wet lens have to be underwater to even work?

My plan is to use it on a 105mm macro lens with a D850.   I also have a 1.4tc I can use, which I've never tried underwater before.

With my 105mm, I'm already too close to many creatures and can't get closer.  (Garden eels?)  I'm going to try my 1.4tc simply to get more working distance.
