Fujifilm x100 series/x-pro series battery reset problem solution
Mar 13, 2019
Reaching out to DPreview as it's a huge platform for photographers I'd like to suggest a possible solution I discovered for a problem I found that plague many Fuji X photographers.
The problem is as follows, if you remove the battery, wait a good 5 seconds or so, and place it back, the camera will reset to factory settings. It can happen to newly purchased Fujis, though I suspect older cameras can have it as well.
I own a Fujifilm x100s that was bought second hand online with a relatively low shutter count. Unfortunately I couldn't tell if it had such a problem since I was not able to inspect the camera myself prior to purchase. For the 4 months that i had it up till recently I am slightly annoyed by the fact that the problem occurs. I keep thinking to myself, once i buy a backup battery, I need to "reload" the camera in less than 5 seconds. I haven't bought a second battery yet and had no important shoots, but the thought kept crawling back to me.
I seen this problem on a Nikon D5000, where it's so old i expect it to occur since the capacitor/ flat coin-like battery has outlived its usefulness. Many digging into solutions only show owners accepting the problem or sending it back to Fuji, only to have the camera replaced! to which of course I have no warranty and it's way past overdue
My search led to a dead end, until just a few minutes ago... when I finished charging the camera, set the time&date, i took a picture so I can change the info display in playback to be clean of information (first time I started the "here we go again" procedure with the playback info setting), only to find the camera froze up, black screen and continous red light. This was because I took a picture in total darkness! Then I turned the camera off, red light still on as expected, (turning it on and off won't change a thing), and took the battery out until the light is off, pretty quick really, and placed it back in. Then when I turned it back on, all my settings were back to my usual adjustments! The date&time is correct, AF frame correction is ON, Auto ISO is on with limit 6400, exactly how I set it prior to removing its battery to charge! I tried the process again and it worked!
I came to the conclusion to this solution:
1. Set the date&time (not sure if this is needed)
2. Take a picture with the lens cap on
3. The camera will freeze up, screen black and red light
4. Remove the battery for less than 5 seconds (or at least until the red light goes off but not too long that it might reset again, not sure if that happens or if can repeat this solution)
5. Place the battery back in and turn the camera on
6. Viola! (You have to do this everytime you remove the battery)
I am not sure why causing the camera to freeze can bring back the custom settings that supposedly "disappeared" from the camera itself (based on my technical knowledge this is rather odd), if someone has an explanation please do tell.
Anyway sorry it's a long read I am however estatic that this worked for me, so now I await others who have the problem to try the solution themselves and see if it worked, if so, you're welcome in advance, I hope this solution is good enough and can be spread out further.
