EOS R AF problem, and a crash?

Not sure what I am seeing here so thought I'd consult the forum to see if anyone else has seen this or can explain it.

I've had my R for a couple of weeks and used it "properly" (ie on jobs) a couple of times so far. I am building confidence with the AF and EVF (coming from 7dii and 6d). So far the camera has been solid and it's my brain that needs reprogrammed to handle the camera, the EVF in particular! AF has been super, to date.

I was taking some headshots last night on location (mobile backdrop etc).

The gear:

  • EOS R (firmware 1.1) + EF adapter + EF 25-104 L
  • Godox XPro trigger, plus various AD200 flashes etc

Camera settings:

  • Servo AF
  • Face + Tracking AF Method
  • Continuous AF disabled
  • Exposure simulation: enabled (I realise now this might not have been appropriate)

Problem 1: initially I had to set up in a dimly-lit area although not exactly pitch black, there was plenty ambient light to be able see and make notes on a notepad etc.  Camera was unable to reliably get focus without use of a modelling light (in this case an iPhone torch!). I have seen much better AF performance from the camera in low ambient light.  Is the trigger causing confusion ref use of AF assist beams etc?

Problem 2: we relocated to an area with better ambient light and camera was able to acquire focus. However on numerous occasions during the session I experienced a scenario where at the same time:

  • exposure simulation became hugely overexposed (very bright in EVF) and lost any accuracy of colour, the image became very orange/yellow as if WB had been set incorrectly
  • AF refused to focus on the face and instead locked onto a rectangular area on the left of the screen. This area could not be moved.

This had also happened in the poor ambient light noted above. A physical restart (off/on dial) was required to resolve this.  In one case I had to restart the camera twice to resolve it.

Has anyone seen this before?  Am I finding a weakness in camera firmware or do I need to refine my settings?

(Update: I've just noticed that firmware updates are available for my Godox trigger (1.4->1.6) and flashes, I'll need to update those and will report back if I am able to establish any improvement from this)

Meanwhile your comments, observations, advice all welcomed - thank you in advance.
