By "inefficient" hot-mirror do you mean that the filter blocks some but not all NIR?

Yes, exactly. The kg3, which I used, offered enough foliage energy at 750nm to give the red channel radiance. But it kills the radiance much longer to avoid cross pollution into the blue and green channel infrared sensitivity.

I imagine the kg1 will work well, also. The kg5 won't have enough foliage IR energy, and the kg2 will have too much, diluting the foliage color with blue and green channel radiance.
