I am running a workshop tomorrow using speedlights on the 550D.

General technique when using E-TTL with off-centre subjects is to lock focus first so that the E-TTL system gets the correct distance info, then apply FEL to lock flash exposure, before re-composing.

This means keeping the shutter half-pressed whilst then pressing the * button on the back and re-composing, which I personally find quite difficult.

If I switch the AF/AE lock buttons (custom function 9 option 1 I think), does a shutter half-press trigger the FEL? Anyone use this method?

I can't find out online and don't have a camera with me at present.

I use Back Button AF, so focus is always locked whenever I take my thumb off the AF ( * ) button.  Would this work for you?

Note: I also use manual flash power for accuracy, consistency, and predictability (but this workshop may not cover that).
