How to safe a lot of money.

First of all my money is safe, even though not saved enough ;-)

Thanks for sharing

I've had my ordeal with cameras too dating back to film (75) and digital (2001?)

Everything I've owned has served me well at one point in time and I could have kept them all if finances allow

One thing you said and summarized well

"Have I finally settled with the best camera system? I don’t know but what I know for sure is that it is the camera system that works best for me"

Yes, the operative word is 'me' and don't let anyone tell you otherwise

Cheers,

That's not a bad idea, actually. What do you use for your one zoom to walk around with? 16-55 or the 18-55?
16-55/2.8. I try to keep my Fuji setup as WR and pick up and go as possible without having to worry about much else but the pictures!

I enjoyed that yarn and much of it is very familiar, although I did not go through so many different systems. More than one body is a great idea though. I love having the 16-55 permanently on the XH1 and either a prime or the 100-400 on the other.

I like your blog and your photos but this recent blog is coming across a little delusional or is it tongue in check or something. i must be missing something

You have some of the most expensive and massive heavy fuji kit available which is basically my travelling worst nightmare. Comparing to fullframe is also bizarre as my fullframe kit is significantly smaller, cheaper, lighter than this as is my fuji kit...

I'm not having a rant at you and mean no disrespect but i was expecting to read something about the xe3 and small primes or something and see the complete opposite.

I can totally relate to your 11 camera journey though, but again find your finishing point unexpected.
I went through many phases. Those were just the last couple of years since I started my blog. When I started traveling I had an unbelievable amount of gear with me that would made Greg look like a casual shooter. Heavy gear plus a very heavy tripod.

With my first full frame gear I sized down: Canon 5D plus 24-105 IS and 70-200/4 IS.

But there are occasions where this setup was a real limitation like on a Grizzly bear tour in British Columbia I would have loved to have a better and slightly longer lens. So the 100-400 is a special lens that I use for wildlife in there is no way that this is a small lens. It is with me only on vacations where it makes sense and there it sits in the car mainly. It's not for hiking.

When I plan to walk a lot my gear is XP2, 14/2.8, 23/2 and 35/1.4 and I doubt that your full frame gear is smaller than that.

Thanks Jerry. I wouldn't be too surprised to see hand holding those big lenses on the X-H1. I was wondering how/whether the OP does it with the X-Pro2. Giant arms? :-)

LOL. I think I remember that one from the Canon forum.
It's a Sigma 200-500 f/2.8! (for Canon EOS, I don't think that they ever manufactured the Nikon version) with a 2x included in the price. It was $38,000 Canadian. It comes in a wood box. The wood box + the lens is around 50lbs, but then if you can afford the lens, then you can afford the sherpaS for the expedition.

Hi,

Maybe my long "camera - journey" helps you to avoid to waste your money.

Have a good day!
I really like reading your blogposts, I think you do an amazing job taking/editing holiday photos. Can you tell me about your PP? Looks very subtle but still very noticable (in a good way)
Thank you. It‘s nothing special. Lightroom that, according to many posters here, you must not use plus the VSCO preset Fuji Velvia. But VSCO is ending their support for their presets so mid term I have to find a different solution.

You go to some great places, i'll admit if i went to British Colombia i would have lens indecision and probably would want a long telezoom.

the a7r2 is normally paired with voightlander 21 and ziess 35 2.8, so about as small and light as you can get on FF in that range, currently using a cosina 100mm macro (plastic fantastic) which is nice and light, small, cheap and plasticky short tele! will replace this at some point.

xt20 i like using the 27 & 50 or one of the small zooms to keep things small and light.

Hi, as always a great read with some excellent images (would like a place name on some as I don't know where every one was taken).

We've all been through the too many cameras and lenses scenario; myself included.

Two thoughts. For me the travel combination depends on the type of travel. Is it business with some photography or pleasure? When I was doing similar trips around the World I tended take one body and a standard zoom, one small, fast aperture prime and one compact as a back up. All had to fit into a briefcase with business accoutrements as a carry-on bag.

Or is the trip for pleasure? Then I'd optimize what's in the bag (or day sack) to suit the destination, the subjects and the activity.

So, it is good to have a mix of bodies and lenses to be able to optimize the gear for the occasion (even though my CFO thinks I have too much choice!).

Finally, as others have highlighted some text from the excellent article this piece strikes the most resonance for me:

"So I ended up with an all Fuji setup which has a number of advantages but the biggest two are that post processing is down to almost zero even though I shoot RAW and most important that I can operate my cameras in my sleep." For me too, all three points are very true: Fuji rig, minimal PP and intuitive to operate.

Thanks for writing it (looking forward to Post No. 1110!).

That is a lot of gear and money to carry on a vacation/trip... For me I find too much gear really limits my joy on vacations/trips. I've pretty much done the opposite of you and narrowed it down to one walk-around day zoom, one night-time small prime and my cell phone for videos and snapshots. I'm hoping one day I can cut out a zoom or prime. :-|
It depends on the vacation of course. For a three week road trip through the South West of the USA or Western Canada I take a lot of gear. For a short trip in Europe my camera bag is small and light.

This is why the x-t100 and 15-45 is so good for holidays, small, light, flexible and the 15mm is not a million miles away from the 14 2.8, yet it has ois, is also super sharp too wide open and at 15mm it is a joy.
If you talk about focal length maybe but in wide angle every mm counts. If we talk about IQ quality: the 14/2.8 is one of the best lenses from Fuji. Don't fool yourself.
My travel kit is going to be x-t100, 15-45 and probably a used 50-230, I sold my 55-200 when I got the 50-140 but I wouldn't take it on holiday, or the 100-400! I might take the 10-24 but I think the 15-45/50-230 will be it and maybe a prime.
It depends on the holiday I think. If you expect wildlife like in Canada why would you leave the 100-400 at home?
For everything else for serious photo activity the x-t100 will be second body now and the x-h1 with choice of usual Fuji top lenses as necessary.

Ive been thinking about getting vsco, but I also read that they will stop supporting pc/Mac, and go full mobile.

But if you once bought the presets, will they stop working?
No but my understanding is that they stopped supporting it so if the Fuji X-Pro3 has a new sensor the preset will not support this new sensor. I have no idea how many presets the sold but I think it is a strange move.

Thank you very much. Easy operation and post processing is where Fuji is really ahead of the rest and I have literally tried them all.

Just bought it, really nice presets. Do you use the camera profiles or just the presents?
Not sure what that means. I use the presets for Fuji, mostly the Velvia setting.
