I've been currently using a Canon EOS 750D for the last 3 years as I have started in the industry. I think I'm ready to upgrade to aa full frame camera due to the better performance in low light scenarios. I'm currently stuck between buying a Canon EOS R and a Canon 5DMK4. What are your opinions?

I shoot a lot of musicians performing, however using my own stone setup. I used a 5D3 for years.

Got the R when it came out. Had also used canon M for years, so I was familiar with Touch screen AF, EVF, etc...

Reason I Love the R:

1) EVF gives good exposure preview

2) EVF also can show the last shot image... so I can keep my eye in the viewfinder and not chimp. Half press the shutter to cancel the replay of the las image shot.

3) I can use manual vintage lens with adapter for different looks. Mirrorless makes using an adapter possible and the camera also feature focus peaking for manual lenses.

4) RF mount is the future. Its like the debate between FD lenses ands EF lenses at the cusp of EF lens introduction.

5) RF body is the most versatile mount... it can take EF-s lenses and automatically crop for them. It speaks both RF and EF to communicate with the lenes

6) You can focus across almost the entire size of the screen. Theres no turning back from this.

7) The R is canon's modern forward thing design despite the detractors. (Folks making controversy to get mouse clicks). Multifunction touch bar need practice but it makes you very fast. Mode switching dial seems like an intelligent move forward. Button placement feels well thought out when out shooting.

8) Canon looks to supply the key glass needed in 2019. 15-35, 24-70, 70-200 holy trinity. Already out are the F1.2 50mm, already an improvement. F1.2 85mm coming out. Already out the 28-70 F2 might be of interest to you shooting in low light.

9) No micro adjustments needed for lenses since the actual sensor does the focusing. all of my lenses felt like they got an upgrade! Cannot stress this enough...

Reason for a 5d4:

1) Higher FPS. Without the necessity of an EVF update and a battle tested AF, its a mature and tested system It will shoot at a faster FPS than the R. However in low light, the R may likely get more keepers....

You are at the cusp. Canon did the right thing: they released an above average body (which we all replace every 3-5 years regardless) but also released killer lenses, which we tend to keep for much longer. Better R bodies will come out, but no need to sweat it.

If you were to get the R, you would spend the same money as you would with a 5d4 except it would be on a state of the art newer system that canon will eventually back fully. DSLR will never focus (full area of frame) or offer the modern features (EVF, silent shooting, DPAF without live view) the mirrorless give us today.  If you rely on fast FPS, though, a DSLR will give you an edge. However fuji and sony have surpassed canon DSLR in that area already. SO I don't see canon's R being far behind.

Good luck and I hope this helps...
