Nikon Z 70-200 f/2.8S: zoom ring position
1

Hi guys,

according to 2019 plan listed for Nikon S lens roadmap this year we should get new professional Nikon Z 70-200 f/2.8S zoom.

We don't know yet when. Rumors are saying 2nd-3rd quartal. Up to no mock-up was presented.

When Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 FL was launched (19 August 2016) there were many reviews followed by field experiences telling that zoom ring position in front of focus ring was not right decision from numerous reasons.

Some Nikon representatives were telling that is was what photographers were asking for...

Different source claimed that only this design allowed Nikon's engineers implementation of new optical construction with enhanced optical performance while maintain lens shorter and lighter compared to predecessor.

Currently all latest generation of this popular pro-grade zoom available for F-mount have zoom ring in front of focus ring, including Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 VC G2 and coming soon Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 DG OS HSM S.

At the same time Sony and Canon versions have zoom ring closer lens mount (like in previous Nikon's design).

Interestingly enough, freshly rumored Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS has zoom ring in front ...

Now, question to all of you who read this thread.

What is your personal preference, opinion and does zoom ring position really matter?

Where and why Nikon should place zoom ring on upcoming Nikon Z 70-200 f/2.8S lens?

Maybe this time, we have (small hope) unique chance to deliver the message to Nikon?

Looking forward to read your thoughts!
