ETTR and cranking the ISO

I thought I knew how to ETTR but now I’m not sure. Let’s say I use shutter speed and aperture to let as much light into my sensor as possible given the requirements of the shot.   Now should I be cranking up the ISO to move the histogram to the right?  I have an a9 and assume in your answer that the dynamic range of the scene is within the camera ‘s range. Many thanks!
