By West side, I mean the area between West Bay and West End. The diving is quite different there and is worth a look if you are interested in shooting wide.
Sounds interesting but I've only been to West Bay twice, in 2008 and 2014. And that was for shopping and dinner. A problem with diving there and staying at the Reef House is a pretty long cab ride there and back, losing a lot of time. Not to mention coming back wet. Have to think this one through.
Morat and Barbretta are at the far Eastern part of the island, past St Helene and within sight of Guanaja. This area gets very little traffic and the corals are mind-blowing.
I've not been east of Oak Ridge on the land, nor east of about Port Royal on the water. A year ago I think we were talking about going quite a ways east and taking lunch, because it would be too far to get there and back in the morning.
That sort of trip causes me some battery issues as I normally only have enough for two dives. My usual system at the Reef House is to carry the rig back to the room after the morning dives, and charge all the spare batteries. 8 AA's, one for the focus light, and one for the D810.
I often change from macro to wide angle in the afternoons, so before/after lunch is when I do that. I can do it on the boat too, but it's a hassle without a table, plus I have to bring both ports and lenses, and I don't really have a great way of carrying it.
After lunch those batteries are charged and I change everything out and leave the second set charging while I go off on the afternoon dive. Reef House is very convenient for me.
I believe that the seamounts you are referring to are on the way to Cayos Cochinos, which is closer to the mainland on the way to La Ceiba. I have never been there (also on account of the weather not cooperating) but it is on my bucket list.
Sounds right. I'm interested in heading far east more than the seamounts. Maybe I'll bring a 3rd set of batteries with me from now on. The camera doesn't need it, but my old focus light sure did. The strobes - they can go more than one dive, but I think less than two the way I normally shoot.
